Faith Formation and Sacraments

Eucharist

The Mass is the "source and summit" of our lives as Catholics. It is the ritual offering of sacrifice and thanksgiving that draws the community of Catholics into the Body of Christ.

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults

RCIA is a process by which interested persons enter the Catholic church or simply learn more about the Roman Catholic faith and way of life. The RCIA process will prepare you for the Sacraments of Baptism, Holy Eucharist, and Confirmation.

Sacrament of Confirmation and Adult Faith Formation

If you are Catholic and have not celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation, or just wish to learn more about your faith, the weekly Confirmation classes would be a wonderful opportunity for you. Preparation classes will begin each September and January.

Sacrament of Reconciliation

The Sacrament of Reconciliation (also called "confession") is offered in the Reconciliation Room in the Chapel of St. Ignatius Loyola and Gayle and Tom Benson Jesuit Center every Sunday from 8:15 p.m.–8:50 p.m., before the 9 p.m. Mass in the chapel. It is also available by appointment with any priest on campus — priests are available across campus in various departments. Call our main office at 504.865.3226 to request an appointment or to be put in contact with a priest.

If you're new to confession, take a look at this guide.

Anointing of the Sick

Although most students go through their entire young adult life without ever facing serious illness, some students (or staff or faculty) find themselves facing such a hardship. We offer the Sacrament of Anointing each Lent as part of a regular Sunday liturgy, and any university priest is able to offer the sacrament as needed. Contact our main office at 504.865.3226 for assistance. If you are a student, staff, or faculty member in an emergency situation after normal business hours, please contact University Police at 504.865.3434 to locate a priest.

Jesuit Identity in the Classroom

Student Life and Ministry offers three kinds of collaborative opportunities for faculty to enrich their students’ learning experience inside the classroom via practical encounters with Loyola’s Jesuit identity. To date, we have visited over 40 classes including Music Industry, Psychology, Criminology, and many more.

Curriculum-based
Faculty works with a University Minister to tailor a syllabus-based experience of Jesuit identity, e.g., How does Loyola’s Jesuit identity inform the study of cellular biology, economics, or the performing arts?

Thematic
University Minister presents mode of Jesuit identity based on general themes of the class, e.g., Ignatian Examen on Criminal or Environmental Justice, Catholic Social Teaching on Economic Theories and Practice, etc.

General
University Minister presents general mode of Jesuit identity, e.g., Examination of Conscience; Introduction to Discernment; Jesuit Values, Mission, and Principles of Jesuit Education, etc.
