Being a Good Neighbor

At Loyola University New Orleans, we take pride in our value of being women and men with and for others. As you know, Loyola is situated within a residential area and thus, the University has a responsibility to be considerate to surrounding residents. We request that you do your part in order to maintain positive neighborhood relationships. We also want to be made aware of any neighborhood issues that may arise from your perspective so that we may work with our neighbors to address them.

Take the time to introduce yourself to the people living around you. New Orleanians are generally friendly and they hope you will love and respect their city as much as they do. We ask that you interact with our neighbors in a respectful way that represents Loyola well. Behavior considered disrespectful, harassing or threatening will not be tolerated. Students found responsible for this type of conduct will face sanctions, including possible separation from the university. Remember, the Student Code of Conduct applies to on-campus and off-campus behavior; any behavioral issues will be handled through Loyola’ s Student Conduct department. Additionally, if you are experiencing neighborhood relations concerns, please report these using our online form: Loyno Incident Report.

In New Orleans disruptive noise (including amplified sound or loud crowds) is prohibited between 10 p.m.-7 a.m. Sunday-Thursday and 10:00 p.m.-8:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday

Properties with four units or less, which do not generate more solid waste than can fit in a 96 gallon cart with the lid closed, are eligible for collection by the City of New Orleans. You can obtain the schedule for waste management of your specific address by accessing the City of New Orleans sanitation services page here.

  • All trash or recycling must be contained in carts with lids or secured in bags.
  • Bring your trash and recycling carts in from the curb as soon as possible once collections occur. Trash and recycling carts can be placed on the curb after 4:00 p.m. the day prior to collection day and must be removed by 7:00 p.m. on collection day.
  • Properties that are eligible for collection by the city can place a small amount of properly contained bulky waste curbside for the second collection of the week. If pick up is needed for a large volume of bulky waste, call 311 to schedule.
  • If you would like to request a trash or recycling roll cart or report a missed collection, call 311.
  • The occupants of properties where violations occur may be cited by the city and/or processed through Loyola’s Student Conduct department.

If you are not planning to take your furniture or belongings with you, there are options for you:

  • Contact the people who will be taking over the lease. They may be looking for furniture, particularly if they are moving off-campus from on-campus.
  • Be very cautious if you do this. Make sure you don’t meet anyone alone and that you get payment up front.
  • Donate your belongings. The Salvation Army and Goodwill will pick up items at your residence. They also have convenient drop off locations.
  • Store your belongings. If you are planning to store items, the university recommends University and Student Services, which is licensed, bonded and insured.
  • Ship your belongings home. There is a United States Post Office in the Danna Student Center and a UPS store on Claiborne Avenue.
  • Clean out your kitchen cabinets and donate items to Iggy’s Cupboard. Iggy’s Cupboard accepts non-perishable food and hygiene items.

If you do not believe you will have the time, consider hiring a cleaning service. Cleaning services generally require a two-week advance notice. Rates vary based on the company and the size of the job.

  • Start cleaning out your residence in stages so that garbage and recycling carts are not overfilled.
  • You can place a small volume of bulky waste, such as one sofa or up to four tires, next to your garbage cart on the second collection day each week.
  • Call 311 for a bulky waste pick up for large items, such as two sofas and a dresser. There are type and volume limits, so do not plan to place the entire contents of your apartment curbside for pick up at one time.
  • For properties that are ineligible for collection by the city, you must work with your landlord to determine how garbage and bulky waste should be handled.
  • You can fill your recycling cart solely with papers, cardboard, magazines, plastics, and small metal cans.
  • The City of New Orleans Department of Sanitation offers a Recycling Drop Off Center at 2829 Elysian Fields on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month from 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Items accepted are: paper, plastics, cardboard, small metals, electronics, batteries, light bulbs, Mardi Gras beads, glass and selected organics for composting.
  • Whether you are serviced by the City or a private collection company, all trash placed curbside must be contained in carts with tight fitting lids or secured in bags. The owners or occupants of properties where violations occur may be cited by the City and/or processed through the Office of Student Conduct.
  • Click here for more information and drop off limits.
  • If you have utilities in your name, make sure that they have been turned off or transferred.
  • If you have cable, Internet or satellite equipment, make sure that it is returned to the appropriate company before you leave.

Leave your landlord and your neighbors with a positive impression of what it means to live near a Loyola student. Your landlord may be willing to serve as a reference for your next rental!
