How to Find a Therapist

Here are a few resources that might help you find a therapist that is a good fit for you. Remember—it’s okay to shop around until you find a therapist that meets your needs!

Please note: This list refers to therapists who may have the following licenses: counselors (LPC, PLPC), social workers (LMSW, LCSW), marriage and family therapist (MFT, LMFT), and psychologists (Phd, Psyd). This list does not include psychiatrists: doctors who prescribe psychiatric medications and may also offer psychotherapy.

Check out your health insurance benefits.

If you are unfamiliar with terminology related to health insurance like benefits, deductible, co-pay, etc, see this website. Some insurance plans may require you to pay your full deductible before behavioral health (ie: therapy) is covered. Other plans may offer a lump sum co-pay, or co-insurance percentage, toward therapy. To find out about your insurance benefits, call the phone number on the back of your insurance card, or go to your health insurance website.

Do I have to see a therapist in the city I live in?

If you are interested in telehealth (seeing a therapist via an online platform) you can meet with any therapist licensed in the state you live in.

Search for a therapist online. Here are some websites:

Psychology Today: A database of therapists and psychiatrists. You can search by zip code, health insurance accepted, gender, race, type of therapy offered, and other filters. Each clinician has a page describing their practice, including costs. You can email clinicians directly through the website or call a phone number provided on each page.

Zencare: Another database of therapists. You can search by zip code, health insurance accepted, gender, race, type of therapy offered, and other filters. You can schedule a free 10 minute call directly on each clinician page, and also view their availability and cost.

Open Path Collective: This collective offers low-cost therapy without using insurance. There is a one-time fee for $59, and then individual therapy is sliding scale from $30-60. You can search for therapists via zip code, gender, race, type of therapy offered, and other filters. Each clinician has a page describing their practice. You can email clinicians directly through the website or call a phone number provided on each page.

Psychologist Locator: This is a database to find a psychologist via the American Psychological Association. You can search by zip code, health insurance accepted, gender, race, type of therapy offered, and other filters.
